Gawker Media Group

An experiment in what happens when you let journalists say what they really think.

About Gawker & Fusion Media Groups

Gawker Media Group was the publisher of the web’s most beloved media brands, including GawkerGizmodo, Kotaku, Lifehacker, Deadspin, Jezebel, Jalopnik, reaching 100MM unique visitors a month — more than one third of all Americans. GMG pioneered the media tech space with its platform, Kinja, which supported all of the editorial and advertising needs of these brands while also exploring ways to democratize the conversation around news.

In 2016, Gawker Media Group evolved into Fusion Media Group after it was acquired by Univision, welcoming other beloved media brands — The Onion, The AV Club, FUSION.net, The Root, and Clickhole — to the Kinja platform.

Yes, I was there during the sensational lawsuit that led to this acquisition and shuttered gawker.com, it was a fascinating event to witness firsthand. While there was discord even within the company about some of the editorial decisions Gawker made, one value remained unwavering: the importance of free speech. If you’re interested in learning more, I highly recommend the Netflix special Nobody Speak: Trials of the Free Press. #gawkerforever

My time at GMG / FMG

I began my career at Gawker Media Group as its inaugural UX Designer, working on features such as the editor used to publish articles and notifications for platform members. Later, I transitioned into Product Management, driving updates including the introduction of the featured article template, video pages, account settings, blog management dashboard, in-house native ads system, a Facebook Messenger bot for our commerce site, and a machine-learning based system to rates content sensitivity used for content moderation and ad delivery rules.
